Jeep Hacked Remotely

Redport Information Assurance
All over the news and social media this week was Andy Greenburg’s WIRED article “Hackers remotely kill a Jeep on the highway – with me in it”.

As a result of this, Fiat Chrysler has issued a security patch to fix the flaw and they have released this as a recall. This is not a traditional recall, owners will be sent a USB drive with software on it to patch the flaw. There are 1.4 million U.S. vehicles affected by this flaw.

Although the vehicle that was hacked was a Jeep Cherokee it is not the only vehicle requiring the patch. Below is a list of affected vehicles

• 2013-2015 Dodge Vipers
• 2013-2015 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups
• 2013-2015 Ram 3500, 4500, 5500 Chassis Cabs
• 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Cherokee SUVs
• 2014-2015 Dodge Durango SUVs
• 2015 MY Chrysler 200, Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans
• 2015 Dodge Challenger sports coupes

This is not the first time that this type of tampering with vehicle systems has been reported. On August 12, 2013 Forbes released an article written by Andy Greenburg on a Ford Escape and Toyota Prius that had their brakes disabled while being driven in a parking lot. Both of these vehicles were 2010 models. These vehicles were hacked using a cable connected to a data port near the parking brake.

As nearly all vehicles now come with wireless and bluetooth connections and systems like OnStar the threat of vehicle hacking becomes a much more real threat. Senator Edward Markey, and Senator Richard Blumenthal, have introduced a bill titled Security and Privacy in Your Car Act of 2015’’ or the ‘‘SPY Car Act of 2015’’ which attempts to set safety standards for car manufacturers. This bill requires that ‘all entry points to the electronic systems of each motor vehicle manufactured for sale in the United States shall be equipped with reasonable measures to protect against hacking attacks’.
