The recent Jeep Cherokee hack by researchers Charles Miller and Chris Valasek have highlighted the need for automobile cyber security. The U.S. House of Representatives are now addressing cyber security and the potential for vulnerabilities in automobile technology security. In the Jeep hack test the hackers where able to gain access to the car through a cellular network connection to the Jeep entertainment system, which enabled them to control the car and also shut it down at, will while it was been driven on a highway in St. Louis.

With the ever-increasing technology in new cars, legislation will now have to implement new cyber security laws regarding vehicular hacking.

A subcommittee of the U.S. House of representatives has proposed vehicle manufacturers to state their privacy policies and implement civil penalties for up to $100,000 for each violation.

In addition lawmakers have proposed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Council to set up an Automotive Cybersecurity Advisory Council in order to develop cybersecurity best practices for all car manufacturers throughout the U.S.

The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade have already released a staff draft on “Examining Ways to Improve Vehicle and Roadway Safety”.

This will include a chapter about vehicle data privacy and will require action to these laws one year after legislation for automobile manufacturers to “develop and implement” a privacy policy that outlines their best practices on cyber auto security. They will also be expected to have “reasonable measures” towards the security of data loss or unauthorized use.

Automobile manufacturers can face civil penalties of up to $5,000 per day for violations of the new laws and as much as $1 million for multiple violations to a single manufacturer.
