It’s No “Faces Off” for Apple!

Redport Information Assurance
Everyone, is excited about Apple’s new launch of their Apple iPhone X with all of its new embedded super tech which includes the iPhone X front sensors which can scan up to 30,000 points to make a 3D digital model of a person’s face. That is a ton of personal biometric data entrusted to Apple. The technology has now become an interest to outside developers and vendors who wants your face data to create more apps for profit. However, this a lot of information that is extremely private. The potential apps that outside vendors want to create are ones that could guess your gender, race and sexuality, and combine your face with other personal data biometric apps to guess your mood in stores while shopping. Thankfully, these apps have not been created as of yet but with Apple’s devices stored face data accessible to developers these types of apps may soon become a reality. However, there are some tech policy researchers which are concerned about privacy policy. Therefore, Apple has made one app developer that is interested in tapping into their facial data to post a privacy policy statement before the user purchases and downloads the available app in their Apple App Store. At that time, the user would need to sign off acknowledging that their privacy may become in jeopardy while using the downloaded app. Another form of personal privacy data, which according to security researchers are lessor known is how the iPhone X allows these other apps tap into two views from the iPhone X’s “TrueDepth” camera. The TrueDepth camera stores a wireframe representation of your face and live read-outs of 52 unique micro-movements which are recorded from your eyelid, mouth and other slight body movements. Currently, there are some apps which can store this type of privacy biometric data on their own computers. Having all of this collected personal biometric data makes this type of technology very scary! Unfortunately, this is what keeps security policy developers worried. Mr. Steve Reinkemeyer, the CEO of Redport IA, LLC believes that this type of technology will spread to other types of technology vendors, developers and their mobile devices who will not care about the privacy of individuals in the near future. Where would we be at that time?
