The “Griffter” is at the helm! Black Hat 2018 NOC Operations

Redport Information Assurance
So, Black Hat 2018 and DEF CON 26 has now drifted into the past, only to hear the remnants of past activity that occurred at the popular conferences that occur each year in Las Vegas, Nevada. Each year a host of cybersecurity professionals gather for the week-long event. Each conference venue also has its vast network for communications, media feeds and email. So you can only imagine how much operational security that would entail. This year DarkReading a very popular online cybersecurity magazine has taken a look inside on how Black Hat protects its network communications operations inside their own Network Operations Center (NOC) and Security Operations Center (SOC). At Black Hat, the NOC and the SOC are the same.
The operations are intense because of the high intensity in network traffic volume that has to be maintained for an entire week. The Black Hat team relied on the Mandalay Bay’s Facility team to provide them a designated and dedicated cable for the network where Black Hat would provide everything else to operate their on-site SOC and NOC operations.
The Black Hat network provided support for tens of thousands of active users. It was a well-established Network Enterprise designed by Steve Fink who is Black Hats designated network architect. With so many vendors and users on the Black Hat Enterprise System, Steve Fink stated that the network had to be redesigned each time they landed at a different venue. Neil Wyler is well-known as “Griffter” and he is responsible for making sure that everything is the network designed architecture works well together. Many vendors also provide their own specialist for fast assistance to keep the network that is under increasing pressure up and running and secure. Each specialist as well as Steve and Neil keep a running record of the experience setting up and tearing down the Black Hat NOC and SOC operations. They record everything to be able to provide the process to future specialists that will be responsible in the future for the successful network operations that keeps Black Hat a success in each of its venues. Black Hat visits three major locations each year consisting of Las Vegas in Nevada for Black Hat USA, London, England for Black Hat Europe and Singapore for Black Hat Asia. Each venue is well documented and each specialists writes on their own blogs on the inside operations. There are also a few videos to show all of the action. It is well worth the look and read to see how it is maintained and kept operational. Redport Information Assurance Operations is also capable of efficiently and effectively running your Network and Security Operations Centers.
